Ukrainian President Volodymyr Zelensky has become this year’s winner of the Boris Nemtsov Prize for Courage, Boris Nemtsov Foundation for Freedom announced Sunday.

“In a situation of war, the Foundation decided to nominate Ukrainian representatives for the award, the Boris Nemtsov Foundation for Freedom said. “Among the candidates were Kyiv Mayor Vitali Klitschko, leader of the Okean Elzy band Sviatoslav Vakarchuk, founder of a unit of combat volunteer medics Yuliia Paievska (Taira), presidential adviser Oleksiy Arestovych, and others,” it added in a statement.

Boris Nemtsov Foundation for Freedom was established on November 9, 2015, by his eldest daughter, Zhanna Nemtsova.

Every year, the Foundation presents an award to a person who is particularly committed to fighting for freedom of expression and helping those who are persecuted on political, racial or religious grounds, according to the Foundation.

Public figures, journalists, and artists are all eligible to receive this prize. The award ceremony usually takes place on June 12th, Russia Day, the Foundation said.
