Finland will apply for the North Atlantic Treaty Organisation (NATO) membership, the country’s president and the government announced in a statement on Sunday.

Finland shares a 1,340-kilometre border with Russia.

President Sauli Niinisto and Prime Minister Sanna Marin made the announcement at a joint news conference at the Presidential Palace in Helsinki, paving the way for an expansion of the 30-member military alliance.

The report will be submitted to Parliament once it has been endorsed in the government plenary session, according to the statement.

In the meeting, the President and the Ministerial Committee agreed that Finland would apply for membership in the North Atlantic Treaty Organization (NATO) after Parliament has been heard, said in the statement.

Finland’s announcement came a day after Russian President Vladimir Putin warned Mr. Niinisto that joining Nato would be a “mistake” because the country faces “no security threats”.
