Monday morning in the D.C. area, some have already reported ice-mixed-rain in portions of Fairfax county, less than an hour ahead of winter storm warnings going into effect.

A winter storm warning is in effect for DC and parts of Maryland and Virginia until 4 p.m. on Monday as the storm system is expected to bring more than 7 inches of snow to parts of the area.

As of 9:30 am, 3+ inches of snow already accommodated in Burke, Virginia.

Federal offices in the DC area are closed on Monday, according to a tweet from the U.S. Office of Personnel Management. Emergency employees and telework employees will continue to work in line with their agency’s policies.

All Maryland state government officers are closed Monday. All telework employees should work as scheduled.

State of emergency DC is under a snow emergency from midnight through 7 p.m. The public schools’ return date will shift from Wednesday, Jan. 5 to Thursday, Jan. 6.

“Schools will be closed on Monday, January 3. DCPS staff should report their COVID-19 test results before 1:00 p.m. on Tuesday, January 4. DCPS students must now test on Wednesday, January 5. Families can pick up their rapid antigen test on Tuesday, January 4 between 1:00 p.m. and 4:00 p.m. or on Wednesday between 8:30 a.m. and 4:00 p.m. Schools are scheduled to re-open on Thursday, January 6,” said DC Mayor Muriel Bowser.

Mayor Muriel Bowser is calling out the District Snow Team, which will start treating roads with salt at midnight. More than 100 snowplows will be on duty in the District.

District Government will operate in a telework posture for non-essential/non-emergency employees, Bowser said.
