    President Biden announces travel restrictions from southern Africa over new ‘Omicron’ COVID variant

    The United States has joined EU countries and several other countries for travel restrictions from southern Africa over the new ‘Omicron’ COVID varient.

    Currently known as “Omicron”, B.1.1.529, the newly identified variant spreading quickly in South Africa, has many mutations, according to a World Health Organization advisory panel. The advisory panel said it could make it more transmissible and result in immune evasion.

    In response, the United States joined the European Union and several other countries in instituting travel restrictions on visitors from southern Africa.

    President Biden on Friday said the U.S. will restrict travel from South Africa and seven other countries in the region beginning Monday.

    “As a precautionary measure, until we have more information, I am ordering additional air travel restrictions from South Africa and seven other countries,” President Biden said in a statement.

    These new restrictions will take effect on November 29.

    These are the countries that have announced restrictions so far:

    • Japan
    • The United Kingdom
    • Singapore
    • The Netherlands
    • Malta
    • Malaysia
    • Morocco
    • Philippines
    • Dubai
    • Jordan
    • The United States
    • Canada
