    52 killed after fire in a coal mine in Russia’s Kemerovo region

    A fire at a Siberian coal mine has killed 52 miners and rescuers, Russian news agency TASS reported.

    According to preliminary data, there were no survivors in the Listvyazhnaya mine, TASS reported, adding that most of the bodies remain underground and will be raised to surface when temperature and methane concentration allow.

    Regional officials declared three days of mourning.

    A total of 285 people were in the Listvyazhnaya mine in the Kemerovo region of south-western Siberia when a fire erupted and smoke quickly filled the mine through the ventilation system. Rescuers led to the surface 239 miners, 49 of whom were injured.

    Russian President Vladimir Putin expressed his “deepest condolences” to the families of the deceased. Kemerovo Region has announced three days of mourning from Friday to Sunday.
