At least 99 people were killed and more than 100 were injured in a fuel tanker explosion that took place in Freetown, capital of Sierra Leone in Africa. Local authorities said that the fuel tanker exploded after a collision. The tragedy took place on Friday night according to local time.

Fuel appeared to still be leaking from the tanker on Saturday morning. Police and soldiers tried to clear crowds of onlookers.

The death toll currently stands at 99 with more than 100 casualties being treated in hospitals and clinics across the capital, deputy health minister Amara Jambai told Reuters.

“My profound sympathies with families who have lost loved ones and those who have been maimed as a result,” President Julius Maada Bio tweeted.

“My Government will do everything to support affected families.”
