The U.S. is set to mark the 20th anniversary of the September 11 attacks Saturday with commemorations at New York’s World Trade Center, the Pentagon, and a field near Shanksville, Pennsylvania.

The 20th anniversary of the terrorist attacks comes amid the United States’ chaotic withdrawal from Afghanistan, a war started in response to the attacks and one that has left many 9/11 families and survivors, veterans, and Americans with mixed emotions.

President Joe Biden and former presidents: Barack Obama and Bill Clinton are joining the ceremonies to all three sites of the 2001 attacks.

Former President George W. Bush is expected to speak at the Pennsylvania memorial. Other observances are planned around the country.
