Japanese carmaker Toyota announced on Friday that the ongoing shortage of certain parts caused by the spread of COVID-19 in Southeast Asia will slow production in the coming months.
Toyota said the company changes its production plans for the month of September and October 2021.
Toyota said it is making further adjustments to its production operations for September and is reviewing its production plans for October. As for September, Toyota said, it is in addition to the adjustment of production operations announced on Aug. 19 (Adjustments to Domestic Production in September).
According to Toyota, the global production volume affected by these adjustments will be approximately 70,000 units (40,000 units overseas and 30,000 units in Japan) for September and 330,000 units (180,000 units overseas and 150,000 units in Japan) for October, compared to the production plan as of August.
The scarcity of the semiconductors that power modern cars was attributed to the current spread of the coronavirus in South-East Asia, which has snarled chip manufacturers in the region.
Regarding full-year operating income, there is no change to the forecast of 2.5 trillion yen (equivalent to USD 22.7 billion) announced in its FY2022 First Quarter Financial Results summary in August, Toyota said.
Meanwhile, the company said it would adjust production plans for September and October. It was unclear how the global semiconductor shortage will affect the months from November onwards.
