The U.S. has added only 235,000 jobs in August, the U.S. Bureau of Labor Department announced Friday in its monthly jobs report.

The added job 235,000 in August has missed expectations by a wide margin as most economists predicted the report would show between 700,000 and 720,000 new jobs.

Total nonfarm payroll employment rose by 235,000 in August, and the unemployment rate declined by 0.2 percentage points to 5.2 percent, the U.S. Bureau of Labor Statistics reported Friday.

So far this year, monthly job growth has averaged 586,000, said in the report.

“notable job gains occurred in professional and business services, transportation and warehousing, private education, manufacturing, and other services in August,” the department said in a statement.

Employment in retail trade declined over the month.
