Taliban co-founder Mullah Baradar will lead a new Afghan government set to be announced Friday, local media TOLO news reported citing sources in the Islamist group.

According to local media, the Taliban are expected to form a government as early as Friday after facing domestic and international pressure to form a new government.

Baradar, who heads the Taliban’s political office, will be joined by Mullah Mohammad Yaqoob, the son of late Taliban co-founder Mullah Omar, and Sher Mohammad Abbas Stanekzai, in senior positions in the government, three sources told TOLO news.

“All the top leaders have arrived in Kabul, where preparations are in final stages to announce the new government,” Reuters reports quoting one Taliban official on condition of anonymity.

According to local media, a number of women and civil society activists gathered in Kabul to call on the international community and the Taliban to respect women’s political, economic, and social rights. They say that in the next government, the presence of women in the decision-making and political sectors should be prominent.

The Taliban, which seized Kabul on Aug. 15 after sweeping across most of the country, have faced resistance in the Panjshir Valley, north of the capital, with reports of heavy fighting and casualties.
