The New York area is under a state of emergency since Wednesday night after hurricane Ida floods the city.

The governors of New York and New Jersey declared a state of emergency late Wednesday night as record-breaking rains from tropical storm Ida led to flooding and hazardous conditions on the roads.

New York City Mayor Bill de Blasio described the flooding and weather as a “historic weather event”.

According to the media outlets, at least 8 deaths were reported, seven in New York City and one in Passaic, N.J.

New Yorkers were inundated by heavy rain and flash flooding early Thursday as Storm Ida wreaked havoc on the northeast United States, forcing flight cancellations and state of emergency declarations.

Ida slammed into the southern state of Louisiana over the weekend, bringing severe flooding and tornadoes.

According to the reports, hundreds of flights have been canceled at nearby LaGuardia and JFK airports, as well as at Newark.

Flooding has closed major roads across multiple boroughs including Manhattan, The Bronx, and Queens, according to reports.

The New York State recorded 3.15 inches of rain in Central Park in just an hour, the area’s wettest hour on record. The city earlier issued a rare flash flood emergency warning urging residents to move to higher ground.
