At least two people were killed and ten others injured when both lanes of a highway collapsed in Mississippi, Mississippi Highway Patrol officials confirmed.

Mississippi Highway Patrol officials said both the east and westbound lands collapsed after Hurricane Ida blew through Mississippi.

The area was under a flash flood warning.

Torrential rain from Hurricane Ida may have caused the roadway to collapse, Mississippi highway patrol police said. Drivers may not have seen the highway, some 60 miles northeast of Biloxi was impassable causing cars to be “stacked on top”, officials added.

WDSU-TV reports that state troopers, emergency workers, and rescue teams responded to Highway 26 west of Lucedale, about 60 miles (96 kilometers) northeast of Biloxi, to find both the east and westbound lanes collapsed.

Mississippi Highway Patrol  Cpl. Cal Robertson said the collapse is around 50 to 60 feet in length and 20 to 30 feet deep. Seven vehicles were involved in the incident.

The investigation is still in its early stages, Robertson told WDSU-TV.
