In the wake of mounting Taliban onslaught and advances nationwide, Afghanistan’s President Ashraf Ghani on Friday vowed to continue fighting against the Taliban.

The president was addressing the country for the first time since the militants seized control of 18 of the nation’s 34 provinces in eight days, most of the north, west, and south of the country.

According to a recorded video uploaded by Aljazeera, in a short, televised prerecorded speech, Ghani thanked the Afghan nation and security forces for their valor, sacrifices, and resistance in the wake of an “imposed war” the country faces.

“The country is in serious danger of instability,” said the president.

He vowed not to allow the fighting to cause more deaths, adding: “That’s why we’ve held extensive consultations with everyone within the government and international partners. Consultations are ongoing and the results will be shared soon.”

Addressing the Afghan public, Ghani said: “I understand that you are worried about your future, I assure you as your president that I will concentrate on preventing expansion of instability, violence, and displacement of my people.”

Ghani’s announcement comes on the same day that 3,000 US forces arrived in the capital, Kabul, to secure Hamid Karzai International Airport.
