The United States Women Soccer Team (USWS) won the bronze medal in women’s soccer at the Tokyo Olympics with a 4-3 victory over ninth-ranked Australia on Thursday.
Thursday’s victory marks the U.S. team’s first bronze in Olympic history, handing the team a medal after it failed to earn one during the Rio Games in 2016.
Megan Rapinoe scored a spectacular Olimpico goal in the eighth minute to open the scoring for the US. Rapinoe scored her second goal before halftime.
39-year-old Carli Lloyd scored a brace of her own to give the U.S a three-goal lead. With her two goals, it was a record-breaking evening for Lloyd, who became the USWNT’s top scorer in Olympics history with 10 goals and its second-most-capped player of all time, after Kristine Lilly, with 312 appearances.
Sam Kerr, Caitlin Foord, and Emily Gielnik scored 1 each, 3 goals for Australia.
The U.S. team lost to Sweden 3-0 in the team’s Olympic debut and then overwhelmed New Zealand 6-1.
The team USA faced Australia during the group stage of the Tokyo Olympics, where they tied 0-0 making them qualified in the quarterfinals.
The U.S. team then beat the Netherlands in a penalty kick shootout before losing to Canada 1-0 on Monday.
