Defending champions Brazil sealed a return to the final of the men’s Olympic football competition semifinal in Saitama on Tuesday, beating Mexico 4-1 on penalties after the game ended goalless after extra-time.

The match was a repeat of the London 2012 Olympic final, which Mexico won 2-1.

The game went to extra time and, while Brazil looked more likely to break the deadlock, the match finished goalless after 120 minutes and it went to penalty kicks.

Arsenal’s Gabriel Martinelli, Borussia Dortmund striker Reiner, Dani Alves, and Lyon’s Bruno Guimaraes all converted their spot-kicks, while only Carlos Rodriguez was able to find the back of the net for Mexico, in a disappointing end to a stellar Olympic campaign.

Brazil will face the winners of Tuesday’s other semi-final between Spain and Japan in Saitama.
