On Sunday, a civilian plane crash at Port Sudan airport in the country’s eastern Red Sea State claimed the lives of at least nine people, according to a statement from the Sudanese Armed Forces. The incident involved an Antonov plane and was attributed to a technical fault during take-off, as reported by the office of the Sudanese army spokesman.
“A civilian Antonov plane today crashed at Port Sudan Airport as a result of a technical failure, leading to the deaths of nine people, including four military personnel. One child survived the crash,” reads a statement issued on Monday.
“The Antonov plane malfunctioned as it was taking off before crashing”, it added.
Among the victims were four military personnel, while a glimmer of hope emerged with the survival of a young girl, who miraculously survived the harrowing crash.
Sudan has been grappling with a series of deadly clashes between the Sudanese army and the paramilitary Rapid Support Forces in various regions, including the capital, Khartoum, since April 15. The ongoing conflict has escalated tensions and put immense strain on the country’s infrastructure and transportation facilities.
The Port Sudan airport, situated approximately 890 km east of Khartoum, has been serving as Sudan’s primary airport after the Khartoum International Airport was rendered inoperable due to armed confrontations between the warring parties.
