A magnitude 6.1 earthquake shook Iran on Saturday morning, killing at least five people. Shortly afterward, two more powerful aftershocks measuring 6.3 on the Richter scale shook the region.
At least five people have been killed and several others injured in the quake. The injured have been admitted to the hospital. Relief and rescue work has been started in the area.
More than a dozen aftershocks have shaken the region since the quake, completely destroying the village of Saih Khosh near the Gulf of Iran.
“All of the victims died in the first earthquake and no one was harmed in the next two severe quakes as people were already outside their homes,” local official Foad Moradzadeh was quoted as saying by the state news agency IRNA.
The epicenter was reported at about 100 kilometers from the Iranian port city of Bandar Abbas.
Many countries felt the shock of the earthquake.
The quake affected China, the United Arab Emirates, Saudi Arabia and Bahrain. According to India’s National Center for Seismology, a magnitude 4.3 earthquake centered in China’s Xinjiang province.
