Five people have been shot dead at a 4 July Independence Day parade in downtown Highland Park, Illinois , city officials say.
“This is an active incident,” city officials said in an update posted to Highland Park’s website, advising those in the area to “shelter in place.”
City of Highland Park described the incident as “active” and said 16 people had also been hospitalized.
“16 people have been transferred to the hospital; 5 individuals are confirmed deceased,” the city officials said in a statement.
“Law enforcement agencies are searching for the suspect; evidence of a firearm has been recovered,” the city officials said.
“Numerous law enforcement officers are responding and have secured a perimeter around downtown Highland Park”, it added.
“The Illinois State Police is currently assisting Highland Park PD with an active shoot situation that occurred at the Highland Park Parade,” the state’s police force tweeted.
