The Israeli air force allegedly targeted a residential neighborhood in Damascus on Saturday night, killing five people and wounding 15 others, Syrian state news agency SANA reported.

There was no comment from the Israel Defense Forces. Israeli officials have previously said that the Israel Defense Forces (IDF) do not target civilians and try to avoid damage to residential areas whenever possible.

According to the Reuters news agency, the strike targeted an area in the Kafr Susah neighborhood of the Syrian capital, which is close to a large and heavily guarded security compound and Iranian installations.

Orient News, a Syrian opposition media outlet, claimed that the attacks targeted Iranian militia officers at the so-called Iranian school in Kafr Sosah.

Citing military sources, SANA wrote that four civilians and one soldier were killed in the attack, while 15 other civilians were injured. The condition of many of the injured is said to be serious. Some unconfirmed Syrian media have said the death toll is higher.

The airstrikes also caused heavy damage to several residential buildings in Kafr Sosah, SANA said. Photos and videos from the Damascus neighborhood showed extensive damage to many buildings.

According to the General Directorate of Antiquities and Museums, the Israeli attack has caused great damage to the Technical Arts Institute of the Damascus Citadel and the Kafr Susseh Cultural Center, the small news agency has written citing a source. According to the source, a technical team affiliated with the Directorate is conducting a preliminary survey to assess the damage.

Notorious Hezbollah terrorist chief Imad Mughniyeh was killed by Israel in a 2008 bombing in Kafr Sosah, the site of Saturday’s attack.
