At least 18 migrants were found dead in an abandoned truck near the Bulgarian capital Sofia on Friday, the Ministry of Interior said in a statement.
According to preliminary information, the truck was carrying about 40 illegal immigrants. The ministry also said that the migrants were hidden in trucks carrying wood.
According to the ministry, 18 of them have died and some survivors have been hospitalized. The investigation into this matter is ongoing. The cause of the migrants’ deaths has not been established.
“I can’t say for sure what happened. There was a lack of oxygen, they were cold and wet, and they certainly had not eaten for a few days,” Health Minister Asen Medjidiev told journalists. Fourteen people found still alive in the truck, including eight in serious condition, were taken to hospital, he added.
Another 10 people were found hiding in nearby shrubbery and will be taken to hospital for examination, said Medjidiev.
