A total of 175 anti-government militias were killed and 84 others were wounded following clashes and reciprocal attacks of Afghan security forces in the past 24 hours.
The Afghan National Security Forces (ANSF) operations targeted various parts of Nangarhar, Paktika, Logar, Ghazni, Kandahar, Herat, Balkh, Jawzjan, Samangan, Sar-e-Pul, Helmand, Badakhshan, Kunduz, and Baghlan provinces, Afghan Defense Ministry said in a statement Sunday.
Meanwhile, Security Personnel discovered 9 Improvised Explosive Devices (IEDs) placed by the Taliban on public roads were also defused by Afghan National Army, Afghan Defense Ministry said in a statement.
Improvised Explosive Devices, (IED), are typically placed along major roads and detonate when coalition troops drive by.
Afghanistan is home to vast mountain ranges. Insurgents take advantage of the roads located in valleys to shoot down on coalition forces in complex attacks. Complex attacks are ambushes that begin with an IED attack and are followed up by firefight between insurgents and coalition forces.
Fighting has intensified in Afghanistan since early May when the U.S.-led coalition forces began withdrawal from the war-torn country.
