Dhaka, Bangladesh – According to the Directorate General of Health Services (DGHS), the total death toll from dengue in Bangladesh this year has risen to 593, with an additional seventeen fatalities reported in the past 24 hours, as stated by the United News of Bangladesh (UNB) on Thursday.

The DGHS also said that 2,308 new cases of dengue were reported in the same period, taking the total number of cases so far this year to 123,808.

Currently, there are 8,378 people with dengue being treated in hospitals across the country, with 3,817 in Dhaka and 4,561 in other divisions.

The DGHS has urged people to take preventive measures against dengue, such as using mosquito nets, covering water containers, and draining stagnant water.

The dengue outbreak in Bangladesh is the worst in recent years. The previous highest number of dengue deaths in a year was 327 in 2022.

The government has taken a number of measures to control the outbreak, including spraying insecticides, setting up treatment centers, and raising awareness about the disease.

However, the outbreak continues to spread, and health officials are warning that the number of cases and deaths is likely to rise in the coming weeks.

The WHO has called for immediate action as Bangladesh experiences a surge in dengue cases. The organization stated that the rise in dengue cases is occurring due to abnormally heavy rainfall, coupled with high temperatures and humidity, which have led to a larger population of mosquitoes throughout the country.

Here are some tips to help prevent dengue:

    • Use mosquito nets when sleeping.
    • Cover water containers to prevent mosquitoes from breeding.
    • Drain stagnant water from around your home.
    • Wear long sleeves and pants when outdoors.
    • Apply insect repellent to exposed skin.
    • If you have dengue, seek medical attention immediately.

The dengue virus is spread through the bite of an infected mosquito. The mosquito becomes infected when it bites someone who is already sick with dengue. The virus then multiplies in the mosquito’s body and can be transmitted to other people when the mosquito bites them.

Dengue is a serious disease that can cause high fever, headache, muscle pain, nausea, vomiting, and rash. In some cases, dengue can be fatal.

If you think you may have dengue, it is important to see a doctor right away. There is no specific treatment for dengue, but doctors can help relieve the symptoms and prevent complications.
