A 13-story building in Alexandria, Egypt collapsed on Monday, causing extensive damage, the state-owned al-Ahram media reported. Rescue teams from the civil defense are currently engaged in a search and rescue operation. The incident occurred on Monday, prompting authorities to take swift action.
According to reports from al-Ahram media, Alexandria Governor Mohamed al-Sherif stated that a “vertical split” preceded the collapse of the building. Efforts are underway to locate any individuals who may be trapped under the debris.
As of now, one person has been injured and is reported to be in stable condition, as confirmed by Governor al-Sherif. Eyewitnesses had earlier informed local media outlets that there could be people trapped beneath the rubble.
The Ministry of Health has dispatched 12 ambulances to the scene, and hospitals in Alexandria have been placed on high alert to accommodate potential victims.
The timing of this incident, occurring just two days before the Eid al-Adha festival, adds further concern. Eid al-Adha is a significant holiday in Egypt, primarily observed by the country’s Muslim population.
Tragically, Egypt has witnessed numerous deadly collapses of residential buildings in the past. With a population exceeding 100 million, the Arab world’s most populous country often struggles with issues related to inadequate maintenance of aging structures and violations of construction regulations.
