13 people died in Tajikistan as a result of heavy rains on August 27, according to a statement from the press service of President Emomali Rahmon. The calamity unfolded on Sunday, August 27, triggering mudslides and rockfalls that ravaged several regions including the cities of Dushanbe, Vahdat, and Gissar, along with districts such as Rudaki, Varzob, Devashtich, Rasht, Sangvor, and Tojikobod.

Among the casualties, 11 individuals met their untimely demise in the city of Vahdat, while two others tragically lost their lives near Rudaki. President Rahmon expressed his heartfelt condolences to the families and friends of the victims, and he promptly directed the prime minister and the Committee for Emergency Situations to extend support to the affected families and undertake measures to mitigate the aftermath of this disaster.

The havoc unleashed by the relentless rains led to the evacuation of over 100 households in damaged villages in Vahdat, where mudslides and rockfalls posed imminent threats to residents. The destruction was not limited to residences, as several houses, estates, roads, facilities, and even five bridges bore the brunt of the natural onslaught.

A spokeswoman for the emergency committee, Umeda Yusufi, revealed that the situation was dire, with significant damages reported in key areas. Mudslides near the Tajik capital of Dushanbe left 14 vehicles trapped in mud, underscoring the magnitude of the disaster. The emergency committee is actively assessing the extensive damage caused by the torrential rains, while a team of high-ranking officials, including a deputy prime minister and heads of relevant agencies, are on-site in Vahdat and Rudaki to oversee response and recovery efforts.
