The International Organization for Migration (IOM) said on Thursday that 112 illegal migrants from Libya have been sent back to their countries of origin.
“Today, 112 migrants have been able to return to their countries of origin through a joint initiative with the European Union,” the UN agency said on its Facebook page.
“A charter flight carrying men, women and children with five medical cases left Seva Airport for Niamey, Niger this afternoon,” the agency said.
The voluntary return program assists migrants in vulnerable situations by providing them assistance including transportation, medical checks, documentation, and other logistical needs to return home safely.
After the fall of the late Libyan leader Muammar Gaddafi’s regime in 2011, many migrants, mostly Africans, began crossing the Mediterranean Sea from Libya to European shores due to insecurity and chaos in Libya.
