A gunman killed 10 people and wounded 10 others at a ballroom dance club near Los Angeles, the County Sheriff’s Department said.
The mass shootings happened at about 10:22 local time on Saturday in the 100 block of West Garvey Avenue, sheriff’s Capt. Andrew Meyer told reporters Sunday morning.
There is little information about the male suspect and he is still at large, police said. No motive and details of the shooting are yet available.
Thousands of people gathered in Monterey Park city for the Lunar New Year celebration.
“When officers arrived at the scene, they saw several people, patrons … exiting the venue, screaming. Officers entered the location and found additional victims,” sheriff’s Captain Andrew Meyer said at a press conference Sunday morning.
Firefighters pronounced 10 people dead at the scene, Meyer said. At least 10 people were taken to several local hospitals, and are listed in stable to serious condition.
It marked the fifth mass shooting in the U.S. this month and the deadliest since 21 people were killed in a school in Uvalde, Texas, according to The Associated Press/USA Today database on mass killings in the U.S. The latest violence comes two months after five people were killed at a Colorado Springs nightclub.
